Nueces Mosque — also called the Downtown Mosque or University Mosque — was started by the Muslim Students Association at the university in 1977 and was the first mosque in Austin, the state capital. It serves as a satellite to the much larger Islamic Center of Greater Austin, which was built in 1999 in north Austin and includes an Islamic elementary school.
